The Eight Limbs of Yoga: Bringing Balance to Life
Ever feel like life is pulling you in a million different directions, and you’re just trying to find a little bit of peace? Trust me, we’ve all been there! That’s where the eight limbs of yoga come in—a roadmap, for living a balanced, more centered life. These teachings from Patanjali (a yoga safe), are like the ultimate guide to navigating not just your yoga mat but also the chaos of everyday life.
In Term 3 of Sunset and Sunrise yoga, we explored each of the eight limbs, so let’s break them down and see how you can sprinkle a bit of yogic wisdom into your daily routine!
The Eight Limbs of Yoga (And Why You Need Them in Your Life)
- Yamas (How We Treat Others)
Think of the yamas as your moral compass, guiding how you interact with the world around you. Non-violence, honesty, and compassion are the stars here.
- How to Use It: Next time someone cuts you off in traffic (ugh), instead of cursing under your breath, send them a little compassion. You’ll feel better, I promise!
- Niyamas (How We Treat Ourselves)
These are all about self-discipline and inner work—things like cleanliness, gratitude, and self-study.
- How to Use It: Start a gratitude journal. Write down three things you’re grateful for each morning. It’s a small thing that can really shift your mindset for the day.
- Asana (Physical Postures)
You probably already know this one—yep, it’s the yoga poses! But it’s not just about touching your toes; it’s about being present in your body.
- How to Use It: If you don’t have time for a full class, even five minutes of stretching at your desk can work wonders. Give it a try between Zoom calls!
- Pranayama (Breath Control)
This is all about your breath. It sounds simple, but breathwork can totally change your mood and energy.
- How to Use It: Next time you’re feeling frazzled, stop and take five slow, deep breaths – focusing on a long, slow and smooth breath out. Instant calm.
- Pratyahara (Withdrawing from Distractions)
Ever feel like the world is just too noisy? This limb is all about turning down the external noise and tuning into yourself.
- How to Use It: Put your phone on silent for just 10 minutes a day, and enjoy some time unplugged. You’ll be amazed at how much more grounded you feel.
- Dharana (Concentration)
Dharana is all about focus—really paying attention to one thing at a time. Easier said than done, right?
- How to Use It: Pick one daily task—maybe making your morning coffee—and do it with full attention. Smell the coffee beans, feel the warmth of the mug, and really savour the moment.
- Dhyana (Meditation)
This is where you take that focus from Dharana and stretch it out over time—hello, meditation!
- How to Use It: Try meditating for just five minutes a day. No need to get fancy—just sit, breathe, and be. Trust me, even a few minutes can make a difference.
- Samadhi (Bliss or Enlightenment)
Samadhi is the ultimate goal of yoga—a state of deep peace and connection. While it’s not something you can force, you can catch little glimpses of it here and there.
- How to Use It: Notice the moments when everything feels right—whether it’s a quiet walk in nature or a deep breath after a tough day. Those are your mini-Samadhi moments!
Why the Eight Limbs Are So Helpful
Life gets busy, chaotic, and stressful. The eight limbs give us tools to bring a little more peace and intention into each day. Whether it’s being kinder to yourself (thank you, niyamas!) or taking five deep breaths to recentre (pranayama for the win!), these ancient teachings fit perfectly into modern life.
What’s Coming Up? A Journey Through the Elements of Yoga!
Last term, we dived into each of the eight limbs during our classes, exploring how they fit into both our yoga practice and our daily lives. It was such a joy to share that with you all!
This term, we’re taking a whole new journey—travelling through the elements of yoga. We’ll explore earth, water, fire, air, and space in our practice and see how these elements can support our wellbeing. It’s going to be a fun and immersive experience, so if you’re ready to go deeper, book your spot now before they fill up!
See you on the mat!
